Suspension of large inertial particles in a turbulent swirling flow

چکیده
We present experimental observations of the spatial distribution large inertial particles suspended in a turbulent swirling flow at high Reynolds number. The plastic are heavier than working fluid so that their dynamics results from competition between gravitation and agitation. Two suspension regimes observed. At low rotation rate confined near bottom for any size or density. rate, loosely confined: small nearly homogeneously distributed ones found top as if gravity was reversed. discuss these using minimal random walk model accounting particle inertia.

The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which describe the motion of many fluids, are the cornerstones of many physical and engineering sciences. However, it is still unclear whether they are mathematically well posed, that is, whether their solutions remain regular over time or develop singularities. Even though it was shown that singularities, if exist, could only be rar...
متن کاملAcceleration statistics of inertial particles in turbulent flow
Turbulent transport of material inclusions plays an important role in many natural and industrial situations. Being able to accurately model and predict the dynamics of dispersed particles transported by a turbulent carrier flow, remains a challenge. One critical and difficult point is to develop models which correctly describe the dynamics of particles over a wide range of sizes and density. O...
متن کاملSlow dynamics in a turbulent von Kármán swirling flow.
An experimental study of a turbulent von Kármán flow in a cylinder is presented. The mean flow is stationary up to a Reynolds number Re=10(4) where a bifurcation takes place. The new regime breaks some symmetries of the problem and becomes time dependent because of equatorial vortices moving with a precession movement. In the exact counterrotating case, a bistable regime appears and spontaneous...
متن کاملDeposition of Various Shapes Particles on a Rough Surface in Turbulent Flow
An experiment set-up is used to study wall deposition rate of particles on a rough surface in a turbulent channel flow. Deposition velocities for three classes of particles, namely, spherical glass particles, irregular shape polymer particles, and fibrous silicon particles are studied. The particle concentration at the test section was measured with the aid of an isokinetic probe in conjunction...
